 I did it !!

We had a bit of thunder and lightening the other night. After our three long hot days. Have you ever tried to take a photograph of lightening? Well, I didt. Very disappointed. I took 100 pictures (thanks to the good old digital), but it didn’t seem to take them quick enough. There is a 4 second gap between pushing the button and the photo being taken. Finally I gave up in disgust, came inside and decided it was easier to put them on the computer, check them out, see if any were worthwhile keeping and then deleting them.

 Guess what I found.

There it is, hiding behind the trees. My first and only photograph of lightening. I had to take 100 photographs to capture it, but I did it !!!!!

 Photos and Memories

Today I scanned some slides for a friend.  We’ve been gradually going through his slides and scanning them when we both have some free time. It’s been great to watch some of his memories on my computer screen.

It’s amazing how many memories can be triggered from a photo. When I did the food blog, each photo brought back a memory of a happening in my life. My mother was a great photo taker. It seemed that no matter how strapped we were for money, she always seemed to have a camera, money to get them developed and a photo of the occasion. I don’t remember her doing it but I do have the proof of it in the photo albums she made for each of us girls. I wish she was around to tell the stories of some of the photos. I’ve got pictures of people I don’t ever remember meeting. Mother dated them all, and wrote something on the back of most of them. All memories for someone.

Nowadays, I can write little stories to go with the photos. I like that. It reminds me of the little details of a visit, a trip, or an incident. The little details that with time, could be forgotten. Little things that is only important to me.

I seem to be obsessed with memories right now. Not just mine, but other people’s as well. I was with a friend yesterday. She was telling me stories about the events around a lot of her miniatures, and I had an incredible urge to write them down as she was talking. So much passion, so much fun, so many memories. Maybe we will get together and I will write her some memories as well.

Sometimes I write for me. Sometimes I write for someone else. Whichever, I’ve got a copy, and it is part of my memories as well. Maybe when I die I will become a famous writer as someone publishes my memoirs. What an interesting thought.

 Airport

I've been playing with photos (again !!). And with Picassa's Web Album. Much easier. All my photos are in Picassa, click on the ones I want, and voila, there they are on the web for me. It didn't work as I was informed that the photos didn't show up.

This was a plane taking off from Sydney Airport. Just playing around guys.

Public Holiday here today. Australia Day. So I've got a long weekend. Lots of time to play with photos.

 Food

I promised a food blog and here it is. For some reason, particularly since I got my new camera, I’ve taken lots of photos of food. Now all I have to do is to find them all.

I’ve eaten in many different countries, and looking back it would have been great to have a. had a camera or b. thought to take photos of what I was eating. Back in those days, people would have thought I was nutz. Most people still think I’m nutz for taking pictures of food, but when you see these photos, you will understand just how visually different all food is.

When I was in Sydney, M&K made some soup. They are vegetarian so I had to change my eating habits considerably. The nice things was, that I can’t cook vegetarian, so they did all the cooking. Here’s some soup we had.

Here’s one of the earliest ones I can find. Some of you may remember, because I blogged this one.

This was my dessert at a restaurant called the Cantina. My son had come to visit and a lot of his friends had either worked here or generally had good memories of the place. I took this photo because it looked so incredibly rude and gave me a good giggle. It is called Platanos. I know because I took a photo of the menu and all.

It is a fried banana covered in peanut caramel sauce and served with ice cream and nuts.

So there you go. Interesting. I thought so at the time.

This next one was taken December 2005. It’s interesting to me for a couple of reasons.

This picture was taken in a place called Cold Rock Ice Creamery. One reason I find it interesting is that I’d never been here before. You order your ice cream, and then you order the extras. The staff have cold metal benches and they mix your ice cream and your extras together and then put it in a cone or container for you. Some of the combinations are interesting.

There are plenty of fruit combinations (strawberry, raspberry, passionfruit), but you can get flake, peanut butter and just about anything else you can think of.

 Here are some.

Another reason it is interesting is that this Christmas when I went to Sydney, M&K and I went to the one in Sydney. So now I’ve been to two Cold Rock Ice Creameries. (Not sure how to spell that one).

Here’s another one that people thought I was nutz for taking. Lunch with friends. One who was in Perth for chemotherapy for breast cancer. A young woman, not the age you would expect breast cancer. So this one brings other memories.

I remember it as being a surprisingly pleasant afternoon with a bald friend, who if she is reading this will get a giggle from my memory.

The person making the lunch went to a lot of effort, and I’m sure she was pleased at how it turned out.

This next one is at another friend’s place. She always goes to a lot of trouble to present not only the food, but the setting. She loves to decorate and loves tradition. So she will use any holiday as an excuse to decorate and entertain. This was a breakfast she put on in April 2006. I’ve found photos of 15 people. She put on a table with cereal, cheeses, yoghurt, crackers,  and cold meats. As well we had a barbeque with sausages, steak, bacon, eggs and lots more.

They have a very long jarrah table outside on their patio and we all picked out what we wanted, had champagne and coffee to drink, and more food than any one person could eat.

This time I didn’t take a photo of the table, but as usual it was decorated elegantly.

Sometimes even the coffee looks interesting.

Oh, yes, Sticky date pudding. Australians seem to love their sticky date pudding. I’d never tasted it. Went for a day outing with a friend to Fremantle and stopped for some afternoon tea. We shared a sticky date pudding in case I didn’t like it. Again, he thought I was nutz for taking a photo of it.

 Surprisingly tasty, I must admit.

Another memorable event, my 6th birthday party at work. This was a total surprise. They decided that because they didn’t have 60 candles, they would give me 6 instead and it flowed from there. I’ve written about this one.

Oh, yes, just found the Spirit of the West photos. The Spirit of the West is a train. For some reason, dining on the train has always seemed so elegant and extravagant. This trip was both. The Spirit of the West is a Western Australian train, which goes through the Swan Valley, through some very pretty countryside, and while the train is travelling, the passengers are eating. The waiters wear gloves, that just shows you how elegant the whole thing was. About 8 of us went to celebrate friends 20th anniversary. If I remember rightly there were 5 courses, which were so well orchestrated that we never felt rushed, but finished everything in time to step off the train when it arrived back in Perth.

There were vegetables to be added. It wasn’t one of these classy eating places who believe that class means lack of food.

The vegetables, of course, came separately, passed around by the gloved waiters and you helped yourself.

This is what I’m eating now.

Now don’t that look yummy and visually appealing.

 Sights

Exhibition Centre

I was sitting outside here when I took the “Sounds” photos.

Darling Harbour – lots of expensive shops in there. On this side, they are setting up some of the explosives for the New Year fireworks.

The day before, some famous American chick was wandering around causing chaos and lots of crowds. As tended to happen my whole trip, we managed to pick the day without the crowds and famous people

There is a lovely walk along the harbour here, again, my photos from “Sounds” was close to here.

This spot at Darling Harbour was where some of the New Year’s Eve fireworks were going to be happening. Here are the floats getting ready for the fireworks.

These next two were taken from the restaurant where we stopped for refreshment. I think it was called the Blueberry Café, M&K and I have been here in the past. I think it is one of their favourite restaurants.

I am looking though my photos and I keep getting stuck looking at the photos. They bring up so many memories and so much writing to be done. I write not only for my blog, but for my own journalling, to help me remember happenings, and the stories around the photos. I’ve got hundreds of writings through the years. More since the advent of computers. There is something incredibly satisfying about taking a photo and then putting some words to the photo.

One thing I like to do is to snap photos while driving. Here’s a couple snapped while driving. Just general shots of things that a. interested me and b. I had time to snap before we passed.

This is what happens when your window is dirty and the car is moving a bit too fast !!

I’m not quite sure who the sign is meant for. I had visions of the gate jumping out and grabbing passer by’s, a bit like a viscious dog.

Houses along the way.

And to end that day, we stopped at a chocolate place. Everything was chocolate.

Food and drink.

And as is my habit, I had to take a photo of some of our food. Maybe that’s a whole blog – food I have eaten !!

Thanks for stopping by. I’ve enjoyed writing. I hope you’ve enjoyed reading.
